Moving often ranks low on our list of enjoyable activities, but with careful planning, it can become more manageable.

Moving often ranks low on our list of enjoyable activities, but with careful planning, it can become more manageable. Here's a timeline to guide you through the process and alleviate some of the stress associated with moving:

8 to 12 weeks before:

  • Obtain estimates from movers and secure a booking promptly to ensure availability.
  • Check with your accountant regarding potential tax deductions for moving expenses.
  • Declutter your home by organizing a garage sale or donating unused items to charity.
  • Familiarize yourself with your new community, including schools, shopping centers, and medical facilities.
  • Gather essential personal records and begin the process of updating your address.

4 to 7 weeks before:

  • Arrange for the transportation of pets and plants, if necessary.
  • Contact utility companies to arrange for disconnection and reconnection of services.
  • Update your insurance policies to reflect your new address.
  • Begin packing items you won't need immediately, labeling boxes clearly for easy unpacking.

2 to 3 weeks before:

  • Prepare outdoor equipment and toys for the move.
  • Defrost and clean your fridge and freezer to prevent mildew during transit.
  • Cancel deliveries and services and arrange for redirection to your new address.
  • Secure valuable belongings and consider keeping them with you during the move.

1 week before:

  • Assemble a survival kit containing essential items for easy access during the move.
  • Keep personal items separate from those being moved to avoid confusion.
  • Ensure you get plenty of rest the day before the move to reduce stress.
  • Arrange childcare or pet care to keep your little ones safe and comfortable on moving day.

Moving day:

  • Empty and clean out your fridge and freezer.
  • Conduct a final sweep of your home to ensure nothing is left behind.
  • Secure windows and shut off utilities before leaving the property.

By following this timeline and staying organized, you can make your move smoother and less stressful for everyone involved.
